The Spiny Star Astrea Snail is an excellent algae eater, including hairy algae. They should be kept in an established reef tank that naturally produces algae for consumption, if not they can be supplementally fed.
These are one of my preferred choices for a cleanup crew in my aquariums. The Spiny Star Astraea has smaller projections along the bottom edge around their shells. This can give them a “Star” appearance when looking down on their shells.
Like all Snails, the Astrea is sensitive to high nitrate levels, so we advise waiting for your systems to be stable before adding these snails to your system.
You can supplement these snails with plant-based food, like algae pellets of Nori seaweed.
